Life as We Knew It

Captivated from the start, Susan Beth Pfeffer draws you into main character Miranda's life as it gets turned upside down and engages the reader through the use of a family crisis amidst apocalypse. Life as We Knew It revolves around the motif of survival. Miranda not only has to survive this major event but has to help her family survive as well. Pfeffer portrays Miranda as the brave, selfless child of the family. She begins to realize that all her problems she had prior to apocalypse were miniscule, and the only thing on her mind is to keep her family alive. The character foil between Miranda at the beginning of the book and the Miranda at the end of the book is significant. Previous Miranda worried about boys and what they thought about her while Present Miranda realized the singular most important aspect of life. Family. This book was a 10/10 read because it had the right amount of suspense and definitely kept me on my feet with every page I turned. Reading this book made me realize the sheer significance of family and had me start thinking about what I would do within an apocalyptic world. How would you react if the world was coming to an end? Would you live on the edge knowing that death is near or would you fight for survival? Explain.
